Gay Helpline
Last Updated: 29 August 2006

The Gay Helpline (formerly Gay Switchboard) is a key activity of the WGWG Group.
This information and advice phone service attracts callers from Wellington, the lower North island and occasionally the upper South island.

Its most important function is as a first point of contact for men beginning to address their own sexuality. In addition it also acts as a reference point for gay or gay friendly accommodation, venues and activities. Gay Wellington Helpline not only offers a phone service to the Gay community, it also responds to those who have an interest in gay and sexual orientation issues.

The practice of the phone volunteers is primarily listening. However, non-directive and reflective advice can be given over a range of issues such as safe sex, legal rights, access to counseling, and relationship problems. If the volunteer on duty that night can’t help, then people on following evenings may very well have experienced the problem/issue being enquired about.
